Reformers!
Articulate Reformers!!
It is our delight to dearly welcome FRESHMEN to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and OAU at large as well as STALITES back to campus.
MESSAGE TO FRESHMEN
To our beloved Fresh Reformers, we congratulate you once again on your admission into OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY(OAU, ILE IFE), specially into this reputable department, SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY DEPARTMENT. OAU is known for it's magnificent greatness, a place where learning is coupled with culture. These sui generis qualities makes it great amongst it's contemporaries. You might have heard or read lots of articles depicting OAU as 'GREAT IFE'. GREAT IFE is not only great with the name, it's great with plethora of greatness imbedded unto one body, among them is her excellent docents, great intellectuals, beautiful structures, sports, amongst others. These wonderful qualities makes OAU stands out not only in Nigeria but in Africa as a whole.Allow me to give you some safeguards that will sustain you in OAU.
Firstly, be greatful to Almighty God for your admission into this great citadel of learning. It's a long road you have choosen to trek down, from WAEC, UTME, POST UTME down to your admission letter. Many started the race with you, only few of you are chosen. This is an undenying grace given to you, it shouldn't be traded for laziness, mediocrity, nonchalant attitudes.
Second, OAU is endowed with many side attractions that might get your plans, aims sleeping without achieving it. One of your guide should be the fact that without your admission into OAU, you wouldn't be opportune to take part in all these activities, your studies should be your priority.
Third, OAU has zero tolerance for cultism, exam malpractice, unhealthy radicalism, assault and so on. This acts are unforgiven, as they attract severe punishment, flee thou from them. In case of harassment, abuse of power, threat, from any students, please do well to report to the Excos, or Staff Advisers. Our Excellent lecturers are fathers and mothers, they want not your hurt, they will guide you through.
Lastly, We are known for the slogan "We do it in group", walk deligently with your course mate, excos, part advisers, so, we can all spawn transmogrification.
it's more than learning, don't be an apathy, be versatile and engage yourself in extra curriculum activities, all these will help you in the larger society.
Also, I would love to share some tips which I gained from a mentor and ever conscious reformer, the ersthwhile President of this association, in person of COMRADE BABATUNDE FRANCIS aka POPE, He asserted and I quote;
Every face of life comes with is own requirements, therefore, the requirements to fully succeed here on campus are very simple, if only they can be followers till the end. You must also understand that, as you walk through this new road of yours, there is high tendency to shift focus, but please, do not shift focus. This period determines a lot in your life time, once again, do not shift focus.
First thing to consider: you must like the course, whether you were redirected or chose this course, you must develop interest in it. Some of you were redirected to this department, and you tend to show lack of interest in it, this attitude is very dangerous. There is no way you can truly succeed in what you do not really show full interest, therefore, to succeed, you must love, like and show full interest.
Secondly: Ignore any discouraging word. People have passed through the same path you are about to journey, and they succeeded. No journey comes easy, success is not for lazy people, rather for the diligence. Be ready to study and commit your ways to God.
Third principle: Give yourself to consultation especially your senior colleagues in the department. In the process of acting on this third principle, be careful. To me, I recommend your excos and class reps, and some selected stakeholders in the department.
Fourth principle: Integrate with one another in your class, learn to do it in group. Many persons miss vital information because of isolation which i summarized as pride. I am a victim of this fourth principle, my part one and two results were very bad because I isolated myself from my classmate, and you must know this, your part one and two are very crucial to whatever you will graduate with. Some persons have more information than the other, but by your interrelationship you will have access to them.Above all, what is your vision after school. You must start writing your vision while in school now not after school, because is not going to work that way. It has been proven many times that, many person who graduate from a particular field do not eventually venture into that field. For many persons, education is just a means not the end. To me, I tag education as enlightenment. Write out your vision, very important. My prayer for you all is, the Lord God will stand by you throughout your stay on campus. You need God, it is not by your power nor your strength, you need God to grant your desire goal or vision.
MESSAGE TO STALITES
You have started the race with much energy, valiantly you'll finish the race with a medal awaiting you at the end. I implore everyone to put more efforts, work hard, be deligent, you'll make it! Remember your best might not really be the best. Keep pushing, you'll make it.It's of great neccesity we agitate for the reciprocity of our stalites concerning the payment of their annual due. We all know that this is your quota to the association, your little impact can help us attain our plans for the association.
Greatest reformers!
Articulate reformers!!
We must work together to make NSASA OAU more glorious, this can be achieved with our full participation in all activities, let's put on the garment of unity, we must not deviate from our motto : Quest for social reformation. At this juncture, we wish you all a excellent session.
Thank you.
